Manage Stress This Holiday Season

The first whispers of fall are rustling, and before you know it the holiday season will be in full swing. Many of us look forward to this seasonal transition – cool, crisp sweater weather, football, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. But for others, the holidays can bring as much stress as they do joy.

Let’s try something new as we prepare to ramp up the festivities by approaching this time with mindfulness and acceptance. Here are five tips to help you manage stress and stay grounded as the hustle and bustle of the season sets in. Try our CBD latte recipe at the end!

1. Accept Imperfection

Unmet expectations are the driving force behind much of the stress surrounding the holidays. The magical moments we remember – finding the perfect tree, baking cookies, watching a loved one unwrap a gift – require planning and execution.

We can often set the bar impossibly high for ourselves and feel frustrated as we set those plans in motion. It’s inevitable that things will not go perfectly to plan. By embracing imperfection and accepting that it’s normal, you can let go of some of the stress and disappointment when things fall short.

2. Remember What Really Matters

While we can get caught up in crafting the perfect moment, we can also find ourselves weighed down trying to handle ALL THE THINGS. Presents! Parties! Decorations! Complicate those with out-of-stock gift items or heavy traffic, and who doesn’t feel overwhelmed?

If you start to feel yourself cracking, try and remember what this time is all about – family, connection, and gratitude. How does your endless to-do list fit into what makes this time meaningful? Don’t be afraid to skip events or take the easier option. Homemade gingerbread cookies are great, but stressed out parents aren’t. How about skip baking cookies from scratch and go for store bought instead?

3. Try and Change Your Perspective

Ask yourself if there’s a way to change your perspective in a moment of frustration. Try taking a second to mentally list everything you’re grateful for this year as you wait in that long checkout line.
Or view that heavy traffic as an opportunity to just sit and breathe. Approach difficult people with kindness. Understand they’re probably feeling the same holiday-induced stress as you.

4. Breathe

Many of us find the holiday season an especially hard time to practice self-care, but there isn’t another time of year where it’s more important.
Not able to stick to a strict gym schedule or healthy eating habits? Do your best to take a moment of silence and just breathe. Your breath is a powerful tool to regulate mood and emotion.
